Happy Real Wedding Day!

After the wedding watched by all the world yesterday, Tom is out today for a REAL wedding!  Probably no royals in sight---- but you never know!

Happy Wedding Day------ we're all keeping our fingers crossed for the rain to hold off as long as possible!

Royal Watch Begins!

ROYAL WATCH!  (And I do not mean the baseball team!!!)

Today is the day waited for around the world by elite and 'commoner' alike----- and unless you've been living in exile for months without a tv or news service you know what we mean! The royal wedding happens TODAY---- as we speak!

While I profess to only watch highlighted news coverage of the nuptials (of which there will be MUCH)---- I am interested to see how all of the Kate & William hoopla will translate to weddings here in the states, Tom Paule Photography weddings to be precise.

Undoubtedly, Kate's gown will be knocked off before we've finished our Sunday paper and the translations of her style from color to design will be seen in every designers collection around the world. Seeing how others take a notable design and make it suit their own personal vision of style is always interesting.

Will you watch? Or do fairy tales leave you cold?

Gown Designer: Vera Wang

There isn't a bride around the world that doesn't know the name of Vera Wang, creme de la creme of wedding designers. She's held her position at the top of the satin and tulle heap for many, many years.

If you're a bride to be, we recommend getting on her email list for the latest in style, hints, tips and other things Wang. Also featured on the website is the current collection of bridal gowns, even our "already marrieds" confess to enjoying each and every wedding gown collection from Vera Wang!

The recent offering contained something that is a favorite for us, pages from her sketchbook! Seeing design sketches from a talented designer offers a peek inside the creative process. The gown sketchedand discussed is "Felicity"--- a fairy tale dream of a gown that we hope to see coming down the aisle at a Tom Paule Photography wedding this year!

"Dress Diary" by Vera Wang
"In Felicity, the hand-painted lace provides a charming counterpoint to the more sophisticated architectural dresses in this collection. I’ve used a palette of lilac and charcoal, which gives it a smoky, watercolor effect—it’s such a luscious surprise and gives the layers of tulle and tissue organza a little extra dimension. It’s so beautiful in this color, it almost looks like a watercolor brush painting. This is for a bride who wants to push the envelope and add a color to the ceremony in a way that’s a little unusual.
Felicity GownFelicity is one of the ultimate garden party gowns, with the punched flowers encircling the skirt like a bouquet and the dark, tarnished beading inside the rosettes. It has all the elements of a fantasy ball gown: the lightness, the ballerina tulle, the gaiety and youthful spirit. Though the skirt looks like it has a lot of volume, that lavish proportion comes from the way that the fabric is draped. You can still see the light streaming through those gathers. It’s a play on volume using light, with the layers ballooning out so that it can filter in unimpeded. It gives an impression of pure diaphanousness. Felicity is the perfect wedding dress for the free spirit!"

Shoes for the Bride

With the royal wedding just around the corner we all wonder if Kate will wear some great shoes? Shoes are sort of the "defining moment" to our brides (and everyone's brides it seems). The dress is the dress, white (or off), pretty and wonderful and bridely---- but shoes? All of our brides look forward to showing theirs off!

You can NOT be a photographer anywhere in the world that doesn't have to "get" shoes. Well maybe except when photographing sports. Shoes are important there too but really---- just not the same thing!

Whether or not they are traditional:

Mean:

Country:

Or very chic----- shoes are perhaps the accessory that brides like the best!

Many of our brides will tell you:
  • ALWAYSALWAYSALWAYS----- bring a pair of shoes to wear on location that are comfy!
  • Break in  your shoes first , no short cuts here!
  • If possible line your shoes with nice cushy padding, especially if they're high heels
  • Weather spray shoes that are dyed. Color bleeding on your feet can last into the honeymoon!

Some of our favorite shoes for 2011:

The Bourne Jasmin at $240:

Badgely Mischka Humbie II, $200

For fun: Jimmy Choo, at $1850--  yowza.

What shoes will you be wearing?

Never Better than CAKE!

Let them eat cake?? Wedding cake is the sweet display at a wedding reception, always anticipated--- sometimes disappointing. Chocolate? Marble? Vanilla? Filled? The sentiment behind cake is that the newlyweds life would be as sweet as the cake they eat at their wedding reception. (If this is true, what does it say when they smash cake up each others noses and all over their face? No telling!)
We always recommend starting with the recommendation of a friend, and then always have a tasting at bakeries. Choose to sample what you like, and start from there. Many wedding couples are selecting cakes that look like the wedding dress, the cake might have elements of lace, or buttons, or the shape itself. A cake should LOOK great, but it is always nice when it tastes great too. Start with photos that you bring the baker, they will have a collection of some of their prettiest cakes but if you bring some examples yourself you will be able to narrow down your choices a bit more easily.

Cupcakes? Cupcakes are still holding their ground as a popular reception 'cake' either in combination with a more traditional cake or standing alone in all it's glory. St.Louis has no shortage of great cupcake providers, please ask for our recommendations!

Save the top tier? A poll of our recent brides say that they don't really care about this time honored tradition, eating the top layer of their cake on their first anniversary just doesn't seem to have the charm it used to. Ask your baker how best to preserve your cake top for best taste and texture if you do choose to save your cake tier. Otherwise, you will end up disappointed that you wasted all of that freezer space for a year only to eat really awful cake.

Many cities have some great small bakers, and independents-- give them a try. The same rules hold, taste first before ordering your wedding cake. Google and small newspapers are a great springboard to find hidden treasures of bakers.

Our cake choice is anything under a layer of really good buttercream frosting! It is a rare wedding when we don't make our way to the cake table and have a taste.......... only to be able to fully capture the special event of course!

Guys & Photos

Why do you think that guys can hate photos? Probably because they think that they don't get to be themselves. (Or have promised the bride that they won't be!)

A group of guys can have a good time during wedding day photography with a few simple rules:

Be yourself while being respectful of the bride and groom
Don't drink too much!

If your tux fits well, you will be so much more comfortable & the photos will show it!

Talk to your photographer about finding places that complement the guys------ if you're bowlers an alley is fun, golfers? Find a course! Love the park and outdoors? Easy enough.

You can cut up a little, having fun should be part of the day! Just refer back to the "be respectful" rule. I always tell guys to either remember their own wedding day, or think about how they'd like it to be.

For the bride:
Make sure you provide plenty of water for the guys to drink
An extra boutonniere or two is a good idea, it takes the stress off a little bit
A roll of paper towels for location photography is always a good idea, those tuxes are HOT!

Have fun, relax, be yourself! Think how handsome you'll be in the photos!!!!!

Scouting Locations

Of course you want beautiful photographs on your wedding day! Photos that capture the two of you today and that will be lasting memories of your day.

ASK YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER for ideas for the on-location part of your wedding day! I have a long list of favorite sites all over St. Louis--- they fit different personalities, different moods---- even rain emergency locations.

If you have a favorite spot in mind, please don't hesitate to ask, I'd love to discuss it with you.

Sometimes there is limited time to photograph on a wedding day. For these times, it is a great idea to use an engagement session to showcase a favorite location.

Where in St. Louis says YOU?

Laughter----

It's true, laughter is always the best medicine!

Laughter on your wedding day? It definitely relieves stress, and ups the "fun quotient" by 1000% percent!

How to have the best time on your wedding day?
  • Be familiar with your photographer! Hopefully, you've spent time at an engagement session and both of you can relax and unwind.
  • BE YOU!!
  • Do things that capture your personality, don't be afraid to be a little silly if that is your personality.
  • Don't worry about the small stuff
  • Don't expect perfection
  • Relax, breathe, smile

Bridal Registries

Most brides and grooms register for gifts at a bridal registry, it is helpful to attending guests no matter where they're from and keeps the couple from receiving 6 toasters. Hopefully.

Recently I heard about a couple registering at Home Depot! I guess you ask for what you need!

Top Ten Most Popular Gift Registries in 2011:

Bed Bath & Beyond
Target
Macy's
Crate & Barrel
Williams Sonoma
Pottery Barn
J.C. Penney
My Registry (All Stores)
Dillards
Walmart

Registries have come a LONG way! Today the bride and groom can register for everything from housewares to honeymoons, and everything in between. It is estimated that 88% of wedding guests use registry services when selecting a gift for a wedding.

Where are you registered?

Continuing Trend? Or Show Over?

It remains to be seen if wedding parties will continue to show off their dance moves during the wedding reception. It can be good, it can be bad, or it can be ugly.

You be the judge!

Mr. Tucker turning 9 months old

Again---- a wonderful privilege to photograph kids. I like to think that the kids in my sessions are the finest children from the coolest families that a St. Louis Wedding & Portrait photographer could ask for!

Tucker turned 9 months and I was very happy to be there to make lasting memories for him and his family. Thanks to all.
